Samsung are testing out brain-controlled technology on a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 in order to broaden the ways in which people can interact with devices

Samsung’s Emerging Technology Lab are working with the University of Texas to enable a person’s mind with EEG caps to control their portable devices such as tablets and smartphones.

The technology is currently being demoed on the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, trying out launching an application, selecting a contact, selecting a song from a playlist and powering up or down.

MIT Technology Review report that, “While Samsung has no immediate plans to offer a brain-controlled phone, the early-stage research, which involves a cap studded with EEG-monitoring electrodes, shows how a brain-computer interface could help people with mobility issues complete tasks that would otherwise be impossible.”

The researchers are monitoring well-known brain activity patterns, as well as focusing on developing signal processing methods that could extract the right information to translate into EEG signals.

Insoo Kim, Samsung’s lead researcher says the speed with which a user of the EEG-control system can control the tablet depends on the user, MIT reports.

Samsung have been working on different ways to enhance the use of technology. With the introduction of a new ‘Eye Scroll’ feature set to be unveiled on theSamsung Galaxy S4, along with Air Gesture which lets you wave your hand up and down to scroll without touching the screen and Smart Pause.
