Pop and Rock Music Facts You Don’t Know

Everyone listens to popular tunes, and many are very knowledgeable about several aspects of music…but here are some fun facts that I bet you didn’t know!









Pop Music is the shortened form of Popular Music. The term was coined in 1926

Madonna started her career as a drummer in an 80s band called The Breakfast Club. She went onto become part of another group called Emmy before finally deciding to go it alone as a singer.

Prince’s full name is Prince Rogers Nelson – he was named after the Prince Rogers Trio, his father’s old jazz band.

Norah Jones is the daughter of Ravi Shankar – the legendary Indian musician who taught Beatle George Harrison to play the sitar. Her real name is Geethali Norah Jones Shankar.

Led Zeppelin, REM, and Depeche Mode have never had a number one single, Rihanna has 10.











Flo Rida’s “Low” has sold 8 million copies – the same as The Beatles‘ “Hey Jude”

Katy Perry holds the same record as Michael Jackson for most number one singles from an album

-In the 50’s, Little Richard kicked Jimi Hendrix out of his band for stealing the spotlight.

-The Sex Pistols were banned almost in every part of the UK, so they started touring under the name SPOT (Sex Pistols On Tour).

Lynyrd Skynyrd took their name from a high school teacher named Leonard Skinner who had suspended several students for having long hair.

-Kerry King of Slayer played guitar for Beastie Boys‘ “No Sleep Till Brooklyn”.

-Of the three members of ZZ Top, the only one who doesn’t have a beard is the one whose name is ‘Beard’















Justin Bieber was named the 3rd most powerful celebrity of 2011 by Forbes. At age 17 he came in just behind Oprah Winfrey.
