Mixed Live 2nd Session

The mix CD market, in case you as the consumer hadn’t noticed, is terribly saturated and has been for a while now. The mix CD market, in case you as the consumer hadn’t noticed, is terribly saturated and has been for a while now. DJs, to their credit, have been tinkering and tweaking with the mix CD formula trying to come up with something new and different: concept albums, themes, digital mixes, samplers, FX units, etc. However, it’s DJs like Carl Cox who seem to best remember the original concept: rocking dance floors, kicking ass and taking names. Taken from the Detroit stop of Moby’s Area2 Tour, Carl does exactly that with his 2nd Session in Moonshine’s Mixed Live line, a series he inspired. And the energy level from that gig is almost palpable when listening to this mix. Carl drives the mix forward through some of his patented killers with a few new remixes here and there for good measure.
Things kick off with cuts from Tomaz vs. Filterheadz, Colt Systems and then hits “funky beats, funky beats” with the Chris Anderson Mix of Blubba Boys vs. E-Traxx All Stars’ “50,000 Watts.” Anderson pops up again with his original “Rolling Bass” and old friends of Carl’s like Bryan Zentz (with “D-Clash” and “Joplin”) and Christian Smith (the Smith & Selway Mix of Slam’s “Step Back”; the Beyer & Link Mix of Smith & Selway’s classic “Move”; and Carl and Christian’s own “Dirty Bass”) also make appearances. The mix is filled out with more material from Ian Void, Tom Mangan, Samuel L. Session, The Hacker, Renato Cohen and more. Flipping faders, manipulating the EQs and triple deck devilry, Carl Cox is truly king-Mixed Live 2nd Session is a funky techno essential.
