Drake: Topping the Charts and Romancing Rihanna

Drake (the rapper) has been all over the charts since last year. He’s been paired up with countless recording artists on chart topping hits and has melted girls’ hearts everywhere, including Rihanna’s. But who is he?

Drake was born on October 24, 1986 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, under the name Aubrey Drake Graham. He is a recording artist and an actor. His claim to fame was playing the role of Jimmy Brooks on the teen drama TV series: Degrassi: The Next Generation.

In June 2009, Drake signed with Lil Wayne’s Young Money Entertainment. Drake’s first album, Thank Me Later, was released on June 15, 2010 and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200.

Drake has worked with several artists including Lil Wayne, Young Jeezy, Kanye West, Eminem, Jay Z, and Nikki Menaj.

He has been nominated for several Grammy Awards and has won two Juno Awards in 2010.

In July 2009, Drake’s single “Best I Ever had” entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number 3. Earlier this year, Drake also collaborated with Young Money and Lloyd on the hit single “Bedrock”.

His latest song, “What’s my name”, is a collaboration with Rihanna who he also dated last year. The song hit number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Rihanna says: “It’s a really youthful song; it feels good. It’s really flirty, but it’s also really melodic; which is why I felt that Drake was the perfect person to have on this song ’cause he’s a young rapper who has incredible melodies.”

Rihanna says that her brief romance with Drake didn’t work out because she was still emotionally recovering from being assaulted by her ex boyfriend Chris Brown.

Rihanna told MTV News: “I definitely was attracted to Drake, but I think it is what it is – it was what it was. We didn’t want to take it any further. It was at a really fragile time in my life, so I just didn’t want to get too serious with anything or anyone at that time.”

Drake is actually one of those nice guys – he is not a “gangsta” rapper like many of the typical artists in the Hip Hop industry. He is a breath of fresh air to the hip hip genre that has been overwhelmed with recurring lyrics, themes, and lack of talent.
