Whether you live in Lebanon or are just visiting for a few days, you surely want a taste and feel of Lebanon’s authentic heritage. Although the restaurant scene around Beirut is delicious and inviting, there are very few places that reflect Lebanese tradition. After a long search for such a restaurant, there is a place I was referred to through friends that simply blew me away. It’s not in Beirut; as a matter of fact, it’s far from. It’s all the way in Batroun, standing out in its isolated, breathtaking setting. It’s a little piece of heaven called Batrouniyat.
Upon approaching it, you see an old stone house surrounded by a simple, spacious garden with neatly cut grass that you’d just want to lie down on for hours while enjoying the sun. The spacious lawn features some slides where children can play and a lovely duck pond. The venue itself is an old house made of stone walls. It is divided into several sections, including a spacious entrance with beautiful colored tiles on the hallway floor, separating the restaurant from the shop that sells homemade products and wine. The shop sells homemade jam, oil, dried fruits, honey, pickled vegetables and other organic foods and goods. Enjoy the wine tasting before your meal. If there is a specific wine you like a lot, you can purchase it from a very interesting selection of wine, including a personal favorite of mine, the Batroun Mountains white wine which has a fresh fruity flavor and is perfect for sunny summer afternoons.
The dining area is in a very cozy setting surrounded by old stone walls, typical of old Lebanese village houses. The entire place is graced with little touches and details that you can’t help but marvel at and appreciate. Whether it’s the wrought iron and antique forged chandeliers, the urns and vases, or the wood elements in every nook and corner, the place is a charming piece of Lebanese history in our modern day.
Attention to detail doesn’t stop at the décor; the food is absolutely delicious! Aside to ordering the traditional mezzé, you can taste and smell the freshness of each dish’s components. Whether it’s the crunchy vegetables or the aromatic olive oil, you can sense the quality of each ingredient. This is what Lebanese food is all about; feeling as if everything has just been handpicked from the garden and prepared straight from your grandmother’s kitchen. After the mezzé, you are served some delicious Lebanese platters with rice, vegetables and rich-textured sauces. The air fills up with the mouthwatering aroma of these dishes as your waiter asks you if you’d like to try some. Your answer of course, should be ‘yes!’
What’s not to love about this place? I couldn’t find one thing I didn’t like. I felt like I was zapped back in time to a Lebanon that I’ve only read about in books; and don’t we all need that once in a while?
