For spring 2010, Elie Saab offers an impressionistic study in transparency and lightness. A slender ingénue awakens in a bed of flowers. Like a pointillist, Elie Saab’s woman dresses by touches, sprinkling lilacs and pastel flowers over veils of lace. In keeping with her youthful spirit, the designer explores iridescent color and layering, blending lace and embroidery with clouds of tulle. Bustier dresses leave shoulders free or are simply adorned with fine jeweled straps.
Mother-of-pearl petals, sequin flowers and dewdropinspired motifs come together in gradations of powder pink, light Japanese yellow, celadon green and Majorelle blue; bouquets gather anew as the dresses move. Prints on organza and silk chiffon mingle with satin and flou to shape the designer’s vision of a spring Eden. There is a new innocence about the Elie Saab woman: Draped in yellow-brown silk chiffon or subtly textured tea rose, she is a romantic ingénue whose shimmering reflection would make the waterlilies envious. A fleeting vision of a dream.
